Architecture

Channakeshava temple is a magnificent structure that faces east, with the Mahadwara facing the south. A square Garbhagriha has two niches on the outer walls, the khumbas and kalasas of the outsides of the Arthamandapa are done in high relief and are painted in bright colors. The entrance can be found with a small mandap, it has the main door to this temple. This temple is covered with stone slabs on its roof and these roofs are supported with huge single stone pillars. There is unique stone art work carved on its giant pillars. One of these pillars has the depiction of the Ramayana events on all side of its huge pillar. The second pillar is carved with the stone art of Lord Yoga Narashima, the boar form of Vishnu called as the Varaha and beautiful carving of the fish and an eagle. The third pillar has the depiction of Veer Hanuman and the pictures of Kamadhenu, which is a holy cow in the Hindus mythology. The fourth pillar is seen with the stone art of the Bala Rama, Vali and the Sugriva of the Mahabharata legends. Pillars in the navaranga which are ornately decorated with stories from The Bhagavada, The Ramayana, The Dasavatara etc from various puranas and ithihasas, depicting the stories of Vishwaroopa, Gajendramoksha, Yoga Narasimha, Varaha Matsya, Kalinganardana, Garuda, Hanuman, Kamadhenu, Kurma, Balarama, Vamana, Trivikrama and other avatars of Vishnu, Vali and Sugriva in a fight.

Religious Significance

As per the mythological records of the Vedic texts, the Arjuna of the Pancha Pandva's visited this place after the great war of Mahabharata held in the Indian Sub continent 7000 years ago. He built a small temple of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu and prayed here for peace and progress of his Bharatvamsha's.
