Architecture
The temple is built in the Dravidian style, with a gopuram, an ornate monumental entrance tower. The temple displays architectural features of buildings from the Western Ganga dynasty, the Pallava dynasty and the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple is known for its colorful sculptures that adorn the walls and roofs of this huge structure on the outside. Inside the temple premise also one can find a large number of stone sculptures and carvings. The Kempegowda Gopuras (towers) were built in the four corners of the city keeping the Dharmarayaswamy Temple Vimanagopura kalasa as a centre point. Karaga Festival celebrated in the March / April is the most famous festival of this temple. Karaga is the symbol of Draupadi, wife of Pandavas. Huge processions are held that start from the temple grounds and returns over here. People of all religions participate in the procession. The idols of the deities are taken out in the procession.
Religious Significance
Karaga is related to the time of epic Mahabharatha. It is believed that while Pandavas are leaving to heaven, their wife Draupadi collapses because of weakness. The Pandavas think that she is dead and move on. When she wakes up, she sees a rakshasa (demon) who tries to kill her. Timirasura's Death, to defend herself Draupadi transforms into Adi shakti (feminine power) and creates an army called Veerakumaras to kill the demon. Thigalas believe that they're the descendants of Veerakumaras. Thus, they worship Draupadi as goddess. Draupadi's Promise After the battle of Veerakumaras, Draupadi prepares to leave to heaven. The Veerakumaras request her to stay with them. In reply to their request she says that she'll return back every year during the time of Karaga and bless them. Goddess Draupadi Draupadi is the prime deity of Thigala community. She is seen as the Adi Shakti who is the mother of Veerakumaras. It is believed that Draupadi visits the households of Thigalas during Karaga.
The temple records reveals that Sri.Immudi Krishna raja Wodeyar of Mysore visited the temple in 1811 A.D. to confirm himself the fame & real truth of "Karagashaktyotsava" since it was famous as the Mysore Dasara even in abroads, The King brought two sharpned swords & presented to the temple to perform "Aluguseva" with these swords to test whether the aluguseva is true or not. The veerakumaras of the temple accepted the alugu & perform the aluguseva. The two Swords were broken into pieces when the veerakumaras offered aluguseva to godess. The king was surprised & surrendered to the godess "Adhishakthi Droupadhi Devi". After this incidence it had given to understand that King's sick mother was recovered from the decease & king had peaceful & prosperous life. The king was happy & donated huge property in the form of land & jewels & taken the management of the temple to his administration, this was continued till Independence.
History
This temple was built in 16th century by Ganga Arasu People (Thigalas). During the 20th of century, the fourth level of renovation of temple was done in Sabhangana and Rajagopura style. The temple has been painted and renovated in 2009 yet it resembles ancient architectural style of famous Gangas, Vijayanagara and Pallavas. The temple may be more than 800 years old, the first buildings having been in existence before the current city of Bangalore was founded in 1530 by Kempe Gowda-I, when he built a mud fort here.
