The flag staff and the surroundings have all been refurbished recently. Perumal is seen in wedding attire here along with Sreedevi who was born as the daughter of Sage Markandeya. Religious Significance

According to the purana, Lord Shiva wanted to annihilate the unconquerable asuras who built three invincible forts called ‘Thiripuram’. All the Devas decided to make a titanic chariot for Lord Shiva in this venture. The platform of the chariot was earth, the sun and the moon became the two wheels, the four Vedas became the four horses with Lord Brahma as the Charioteer. The great Meru Mountain became the bow and the giant serpent, Vasuki became the thread of the bow. But to eliminate the incredible forts built by the demons with the power of magic achieved through rigorous penance, the mighty bow also needed a ‘prodigious arrow’. Lord ShriHari, out of his divine mercy, accepted to be the arrow and helped Lord Shiva to obliterate the asuras and the thiripurams. Hence the presiding deity of the temple is called Sara (arrow) Narayanar.

History

Saranarayana Perumal Thiruvadigai was originally built by Pallavas and recently rebuilt. The temple is mentioned in the 4th chapter of the Brammanda Purana written by Sage Vyasa wherein the glory of Saranarayana Perumal Thiruvadigai is told to sage Narada by Lord Brahm. The temple was built 1000 years ago by Pallavas. Arjuna is said to have visited this temple at the end of the Mahabaratha war. Sage Veda Vyasa in his narration refers to Arjuna's announcement ‘Thiruvathigai Kanden’. The great Acharya Sri Vedantha Desigar had worshipped here and eulogized him in his ‘Daya Sathagam’.
