Architecture

There are beautiful sculptures of figures of humans, birds, animals, etc. decorating the pillars of the temple, which is built in the Hoysala style of architecture and the pillars have the typical symbols of lions, soldiers and dancing girls on them. Some of the stone pillars used in the Mantapa. When tapped with some coin etc make a sound of copper metal. In this spot, one may view the area where Kempegowda used to give judgments during meetings. This temple is constructed in the Dravidian Style, there is a complex mantapa for Nandi. There is also a Nrutya Mantapa (Dance Floor) known as Kempegowda Hazara - where cultural functions are believed to be arranged. On the roof top of this mantap, beautiful paintings were depicted of which only few remains are visible now. There is also a Nandi idol mantap consecrated on a rock of about 30 feet which seem to be identification of the region boundaries. A large square shaped pond at some distance in the front of the temple. The large temple complex include a spacious inner prakara (courtyard), this temple is believed to be constructed during the period of Kempa Veraappa Gowda during 1512 as per the copper plates and old wall carvings available even now with a history of about 500 years.

History

This temple was built in 16th century by Sri Nada Prabhu Kempe Gowda or Kempe Gowda-II. The temple Gopuram was struck with a thunderbolt and had got damaged few 100 years back which has been renovated in a fine way by the Archaeological department of Karnataka. Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar Kings, the Mysore Wodeyars are the contributors of this temple.
