Architecture

The Shiva Lingas are Lord Shiva and Lord Yama. Lord Yama called as Kaleswara Swamy and Lord Shiva called as Mukteswara Swamy. This temple has 5 Tier Gopuram with 7 Kalisams and constructed in Kakatiya style of architecture. The walls of this ancient temple are replete with rare sculptures like those of Surya,Matsya and Brahma.

Religious Significance

One day Lord Yama observed his soldiers sitting idle in his Yama Loka. With anger Yama asked them why they were not on duty. Where are the sinners? Why is it Yamaloka is empty? The trembling soldiers answered saying my Lord these days people began worshipping Lord Muktheeshwara at Kaleshwara temple after taking holy dip in Triveni Sangam. The ever-merciful Lord Shiva is simply granting them moksha and so we have no work to do. Saddenly at the turn of events in Yamaloka, Lord Yama straightaway headed to Lord Brahma and poured out his anguish. How people are worshipping Lord Muktheeshwara at Kaleshwar temple and how they are attaining Shiva Saayujya,i.e. merging in Lord Shiva. Surprised Lord Brahma said, Lets go to Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva and find out everything. At Kailash, Lord Yama once again poured out his anguish before Lord Shiva. He said, Lord My Yamaloka is empty. I and my soldiers have no work since you are granting Shiva Saayujya to people worshipping at Kaleshwara temple near Triveni Sangamam. If the situation continues I have to close my world. Oh Lord, save me and my Yamaloka, The beaming Shiva thus replied. You go to the Kaleshwar Temple with all devathas. Install another Shivalinga just besides the one already existing on the same Panapattam. People begin to wonder looking at the two Shivalingas on a single Panapattam. They then think since all Shivalingas are same they proceed to worship first Muktheswara ignoring Kaleshwara, the Linga that you installed. People who ignore you and straightaway worship me shall not attain Shiva Saayujya, they just go to Yamaloka. Happy with the boon Yama and Brahma went back to their kingdoms. This is the reason why there are two Shivalingas on a single Panapattam.

History

This temple is built in 11th and 12th centuries A.D. by Chalukyas and renovated by the Kakatiyas during the 13th century. Chalukyas & Kakatiyas are the contributors of this temple.
