Vemana was a poet and was known as the ‘Praja Kavi’, meaning ‘the poet of the people’. The poems he wrote were simple and lucid and did have a mass appeal. He wrote what the truth about the day to day life and the about social evils. The verses were very profound and written colloquially. It found favour with the literates and the illiterates.
