Architecture

Incidentally Raja Raja Cholan’s father’s name was Sundara Cholan. Hence, the name for the main deity in the temple is Sundara and Azhagu mean ‘beautiful’ in Sanskrit and Tamil respectively. The temple faces in West direction. The temple has a Dhwaja Stambham and built in Dravidian style of architecture. Azhagu Perumal Vaniyambadi was built by Madurantaka Cholan around 985 C.E. as per stone inscriptions found here. The temple Holy Water (Theertham) is Sheera River.

Religious Significance

In a dispute between Brahma and his consort Saraswathi results in Brahma cursing her to go dumb. The releif for this curse is said to be praying to Lord Shiva and offering food. This is done by Vaani after bathing in the Sheera River and Lord Shiva appears with his consorts to accept the food. So does the Lord Vishnu to claim his portion of the food. This episode is believed to have taken place here at Azhagu Perumal Vaniyambadi. Thus, the ShivaTemple and Perumal Temple here in Vaniyambadi are associated with each other. This temple was built in between 11th century to 14th century by Sadasivaranjan of Vijayanagar Dynasty.
