Architecture

Lord Shiva after granting wish to Bhasmasura, the demon was in a fix and stood in the form of rock as Bhairavewswara on this hillock and Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini enticed Bhasmasura for his own death at this place. The name Mohanagiri Bhairaveswara later changed to Mopuri Bhairaveswara in the present form. The temple was built in Vijayanagara style of architecture. Mopuru Bhairavesvara swami temple has Two-Raja Gopurams opposite to each other(East-West) and a Dhwaja Stambham.

There are nine epigraphs of the temple walls and mandapas which threws light on the history of the Bhairavesvara Temple. Inscriptions found at the temple date back to 12th Century A.D. Records the name of the Chola king Mahamandalesvara Bhrammideva Chola Maharaja grandson of Bhogaladevi and Bhrammideva. It informs two door posts of the entrance in the mandapa of the Bairavesvara temple. The temple has a Koneru and the nature of stone is Black stone lingam.

It is believed that the rock form of Bhairaveswara was growing continuously and his sister put her hand over him to stop the growth of the rock. Enraged by this Lord Bhairaveswara asked her sister to leave the place and she stands in the form Akka Pappurammma at the base of this hilllock. The temple was built by the Vijayanagar ruler Sri Krishna Devaraya and renovated in 2014 - 2017.

History

Chola king Mahamandalesvara Bhrammideva Chola Maharaja grandson of Bhogaladevi and Bhrammideva. With the contributions from the devotees and the financial aid from the Endowment Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh, renovation of Garbha Gopuram, construction of a Gali Gopuram and Kalyana Mandam has been completed. Where in Kakatiya rulers also worshipped at this temple. Through the centuries, visitors from not only Andhra Pradesh were visiting the temple but also from neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. A large number of Nayanars offered their worship to Load Shiva at this place as evinced by the large number of their statutes at the temple.
