For men the dress code is Shirt & Trouser, Dhoti or Pyjamas with upper cloth.
For women the preferred dress code is saree or half-saree with blouse or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.

Pilgrims/visitors will not be allowed inside the temple if dress code is not followed.

Architecture

During the churning of the milk ocean to take nectar, a deadly poison Alahala came first. To escape its effect, the Devas appealed to Lord Shiva who dared to devour it to protect the Devas. Mother Ambica held the neck of Lord Shiva tightly so that the potion could not go further down the body of Lord Shiva. The temple was raised here on this story, as the Lord consumed the Nanju (poison). As the poison made a Blue (Neelam in Tamil) scar on the throat (Kanda), he is also called Tiruneelakandan. Sri Nanjundeswarar Temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram and facing in East direction. This temple was constructed in Dravidian style of architecture and has a temple tank. As in the Madurai Meenakshi temple, 8 elephants are holding the Vimana – tower around the Shiva shrine in the temple. Lord Brahmma appears under one elephant and Lord Lakshminarayana below the other. Copper plate inscriptions in Nanjundeswarar Karamadai indicate the grant made by Iswara Deva Raja, the general of Krishnadeva Raya (who ruled between 1509 and 1529 CE) of a village called Poosarpalaym to the Brahmins who served here.

Religious Significance

As per another legend, there was a fight between the Devas and Asuras (demon) during the chruning of Ocean of Milk for Amrita, the ambrosia. Asuras were able to overpower Devas at one point of time and the Devas sought the rescue from Vishnu. Vishnu appeared as Mohini to lure the asuras and gave them empty pot. While churning the ocean of milk, there were a lot of divine elements like Kamadhenu that appeared. During one part of the churning, poisonous gases began to emnate and both the asuras and devas were seeking rescue from Shiva in his abode at Kailasa. Shiva appeared and drank the poison and while gulping the contents, Parvathi grabbed his throat and the poison remained in his throat. Since Shiva drank the poison (called Nanju), he came to be referred as Nanjundeswarar.

History

This temple was built 500 to 1000 years old, the Vijayanagar and Nayaka kings had majorly contributed towards erecting newer structures within the complex sometime during the 16th century.
