Religious Significance

According to the sthalapuranam, a muni named Mrukahanada was a great follower of the Lord Shiva. Once he did a penance with the aim of getting children and Lord Shiva gave a boon with a choice, to select a baby having no husband throughout her life or a boy surviving 11 years with a spirit of devotion and pious personality. The sage chose a boy at the instance of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva granted the boon accordingly. When the boy was born, he was named as "Markandaya". Markandaya had the knowledge of his short survival. Hence, he dedicated his life for tapas (penance), installed a Linga at the place where the temple is now situated and worshipped the Linga. On attaining the age of 11 years, Yama (God of Death) tried to take his life but, Lord Shiva came to the rescue of the boy and gave boon of total survival of his life. The boy completely dedicated his life for the worship of Lord Shiva and reached Shiva and Parvathi.
