Dress Code

  • Pilgrims/visitors will not be allowed inside the temple if dress code is not followed.

Ranganayaki is none other than Vishnu’s wife lakshmi. The sanskrit word Natha means husband Ranganayaki's husband so named as Ranganatha and also called Ranganatha swamy. Sri Ranganatha swamyTemple is facing in West direction and the main deity is made of Salagrama Sila. There is a vast prakara with a gateway having tall Rajagopura and another gopuram at back side of temple both are same features, the gopuras are 5 tier, Pillar shaped designs and 5 kalasas on those gopuras. The Gopuras were built in Dravidian style but constructed by Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya in the 16th century. There is a Garuda Sthamba (flag post) covered with gold colour plates, which mentions the offerings made by Emperor Krishnadevaraya in 1524 A.D. and there is stone Deepastambham in front of Raja gopuram. In front of the Ardha mantapa is a spacious Navaranga having square later Vijayanagara style pillars. The Huge stepped kalyani (sacred pond) is on the right side of the temple and many rituals are conducted here.

Grabha Gudi : The presiding Deity is housed in the middle of the temple, tower on Sanctum sculptured with God and Goddess of hindu Dravida Shikhara having later Vijayanagara workmanship, the deity inside the temple reflects Vijayanagara Empire style. There are structures inside the sanctum which were also built by the Cholas and later renovated. The main deity is traditionally believed to be installed by Mandavya Rishi.

Religious Significance

Yelahanka Nadaprabhu King Kempegowda built a watch tower near the Thirumale temple. Even now, the ruins of the tower can be seen his grandson, Kempegowda-II also renovated the temple. During the period of Tippu Sultan, many Hindu temples were destroyed. To save this temple, they called Venkateshwara as Ranganatha, as Tippu Sultan was faithful to his god Ranganatha Swamy at Srirangapattana.


Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is built in 12th century by King Rajendra Chola. Later, renovated during the reign of Vijayanagara dynasty. The present form of the temple was built by the King Kempegowda and Later Kempegowda-I and II contributed towards the temple. King Jayachamaraja Wodeyar is contributed for this temple.
