Architecture
Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha again to safeguard the people who were being troubled by asuras. The Lord chased the asuras away and decided to stay here out of his own desire to continue protecting people from evil forces. Hence the place got its name as Velukkai-where Vel means Wish and irukkai means stay. The temple faces in West direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture has a three tiered Raja gopuram. The Vimanam (the tower above the sanctum sanctorum) of Sri Azhagiya Singa Perumal Temple is called as Kanaka Vimanam.
Religious Significance
After killing Hiranyakashipu he was chasing away the Asura’s soldiers and he is believed to have found this place serene and sat down here at Thiruvelukkai to rest. The temple is praised in the Mangalasasanam hymns of Saints Peyazhwar and Tirumangai Azhwar. The temple was built 5th to 10th Century C.E.
