Architecture

Karumariamman Thiruverkadu temple is believed to represent the consorts of the Hindu holy Trinity and thus called reengara peedam. Shakti appeared as maya and replaced the child of nandagopal (in Lord Krishna’s story) in the womb, thus the goddess here is called Karu (womb) Mari (changed) Amman (goddess) is facing East direction. The temple built in Dravidian style of architecture. There is a 5 tier Raja gopuram. The flag Post Kodimaram is in front of Ambica shrine. Festivals begin in Ambica temples with kappu kattu (announcing the beginning of festival) ceremony. Here festivals begin by hosting the flag. The sanctum sanctorum under the Golden vimanam tower above the sanctum. There are 3 prakarams around the sanctum. Next to Verkanni is the glass hall where Lord Arumuga Peruman is posing with Valli and Deivayani. There is a big tank in front of the temple. The float festival of Devi Karumari is usually conducted here. This tank has neat and perfect steps. This is the tank formed by Lord Muruga as per wishes of Devi Karumari and is called Thiruchamber poigai. There is a shrine for Karumariamman with an idol made of wood.

Religious Significance

There was an Ant - Hill in this place long ago, here people were worshipping this as mother Ambica. Mother appeared in the dream of a devotee and asked him to build a temple for her in that spot. When people demolished the Ant - Hill, they found Ambica as a swayambhu and built the temple here. As she was not in the womb of a Mother, she is praised as one not from the womb (Karuvil Illadha Karumari). The temple is 500 - 1000 years old and built by Chola kings.
